Cawdor Castle
Discover the captivating Cawdor Castle, a Highland castle that dates back to the 14th century and served as the home of the Thanes of Cawdor. Located 5 miles southwest of Nairn, this castle was built around a 15th-century tower house that originally belonged to Clan Cawdor before passing into the hands of the Campbells in the 16th century. Despite its literary connection to Shakespeare’s Macbeth, which is set several centuries earlier, the castle has a unique tale surrounding its establishment. According to legend, it was built around an ancient holly tree that dates back to 1372, which visitors can still explore today in the dungeon area.
Step inside and experience the sumptuous interiors of the castle, with its portraits of past generations in the Drawing Room, the Tapestry Bedroom with its precious wall hangings, and the Dining Room adorned with a magnificent stone fireplace. You can also discover the Old Kitchen, which still retains its 19th-century range and an array of antique cooking implements.
In addition to the castle, there are three beautiful gardens to explore on the grounds, and a 9-hole golf course located nearby. If you’re looking for souvenirs or gifts, be sure to visit the gift shop or bookshop, and a wool store is also available for those in need of knitwear items during their stay. Hungry? Head over to the restaurant situated within the castle, or stop by the snack bar near the car park for a quick bite between sightseeing sessions.
