Kingussie Cemetery
We care for just 14 graves of men who passed away during the Second World War in this modest Speyside cemetery, but they reflect four diverse ways that the war affected the Highlands. Two were born in this valley. Three of these commemorated here were classified as civilian war workers instead of servicemen – volunteer lumberjacks from Newfoundland assisting with the wartime effort by logging timber in Scotland’s forests. However, they are not those furthest from home: nine out our eleven war dead here belonged to Britain’s Indian Army. All were members of Royal Indian Army Service Corps (RIASC), a unit assigned to feed and transport personnel and equipment around India’s army divisions. What brought them all way over to such a remote Highland cemetery?
