The Shieling Project
Experience the Highlands in a new and unique way with the Shieling Project, an award-winning off-grid social enterprise. A week of craft, outdoor living and Gaelic song will allow you to truly immerse yourself into this local culture. This ‘slow adventure’ is located near Beauly in Glen Strathfarrar for five days and five nights where inspiring craftspeople, ecologists or musicians are present throughout your stay. There are weeks suitable for adults, families or children alike who can learn traditional processes such as weaving baskets from willow; gathering plants/lichens then dyeing wool before weaving it all together – not forgetting story telling too! You could also take part green building activities alongside other enjoyable tasks like cooking outdoors & wild foraging while taking care of our livestock simultaneously! At the core of this project lies its namesake shielings which were used many years ago during summertime by locals to graze cows amongst collecting/spinning/weaving different materials – always set against their beloved Gaelic working songs. Dr Sam Harrison (Project Manager) says “Our experiences combine an immersion into our rich heritage of landscape, song & story with a wonderfully restful & rewarding holiday”. Alongside that recently completed bothy accommodation offers guests classic tin bothys combined elegantly modern finishes plus organic locally sourced food cooked onsite resulting in lasting memories long after leaving Scotland’s Highlands behind once again !
