Balmacara Estate & Woodland Walks

Balmacara Estate is cared for by the National Trust for Scotland and it’s a real hidden gem. Spanning 2500 hectares of Lochalsh peninsula, visitors have the chance to experience traditional Highland crofting in action. Crofting is a small-scale, low-intensity form of agriculture that has great environmental benefits while also being central to many Highland communities. Since the days when clans ruled this region, Balmacara’s landscape has been shaped by this practice which can still be seen today at Duirinish and Kirkton with their flower rich meadows; Coille Mhòr Celtic rainforest full of oaks and birches; Achaidh na h-Inich loch boasting dragonflies near its crannog; Murchisons Monument as well as Plockton village built according to plan – all are testament to past and present forms of crofting activities here. Visitors may explore 17 miles worth or paths throughout estate via several parking areas where they will discover some spectacular native wildlife species along with plants galore!
