Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve
Knockan Crag is a National Nature Reserve managed by NatureScot, renowned for its globally important geological site. The low cliff of Knockan exposes rocks that sparked scientific discovery in the 19th century when it was found to be composed of an old slice on top of much younger ones. At this remarkable spot visitors can bridge 500 million years worth of history with their own hands and see firsthand the powerful Moine Thrust – two continents crashing together – that formed it all. The reserve offers many ways to explore such as Rock Room, Rock trails and art or follow one (or more) three trails along The Rock Route through North West Highlands suitable for different abilities; all providing stunning views over mountains and lochs while they’re at it! Facilities include car park, toilets, visitor centre etc., open year-round located 13 miles north from Ullapool off A835 road accessible via buses from Ullapool/Inverness upon request at parking area.
