Cromarty Courthouse Museum

Cromarty Courthouse Museum is a Grade A listed 18th century townhouse that was refurbished in the 1980s. It has two floors with an additional single storey jail extension, added mid-19th century to house 3 cells and an exercise gallery. This fascinating museum houses exhibitions about Cromarty and its neighbouring parish of Resolis, as well as unique soundscapes throughout the building which give visitors insight into Highland justice from times past based on real stories told using mannequins. The collection consists of objects, paper archives, books and photographs illustrating the history of the area beginning from when it was founded through its heyday up until present day. There are also four story soundscapes within this historic building – two trials set in a courtroom dealing with vandalism and pub brawl incidents; one prison cell featuring a Victorian era prisoner talking to his jailer; plus another starring Sir Thomas Urquhart who will confront you behind his desk! All voices used for these recordings come from local community members making them all the more special.
