Ballindalloch Castle
Ballindalloch Castle is situated in the heart of Speyside, the most productive whisky region in Scotland. This historic castle is one of the few private castles in Scotland that has been continuously inhabited by its founding family, the Macpherson-Grants. Originally built as a fortified tower house in 1546, the castle was later transformed into a luxurious country retreat during the Victorian era. The castle’s history includes the formation of the Black Watch regiment, an independent company led by Colonel William Grant, the 9th Laird of Ballindalloch. The regiment was formed in 1725 to monitor the Scottish Highlands and prevent cattle rustling and smuggling following the Jacobite Rising of 1715.
Despite its grandeur, the castle remains a beloved family residence with personal heirlooms belonging to the current occupants among the general finery. The castle boasts a fine collection of Spanish paintings from the 16th century, one of the finest country house libraries, a magnificent fireplace adorning the dining room, a vaulted hall, and a nursery featuring antique toys, and more.
The estate is home to the rivers Spey and Avon, providing excellent fishing opportunities, and the oldest Aberdeen Angus herd can be seen grazing on the nearby land. The walled and rock gardens provide a tranquil haven during the summer months when they are in full bloom.
The castle shop stocks a wide selection of quality Scottish crafts, including ‘I Love Food’ recipe books authored by Mrs Clare Macpherson-Grant Russell, the mother of the present Laird. Light refreshments are served in the tearoom inside the castle premises.
