Elgin Cathedral
Elgin Cathedral, also known as the ‘Lantern of the North’, is a majestic and historic ruin located in Elgin. It dates back to the 13th century and has a long and fascinating history. It was severely damaged by fire following an attack from Robert III’s brother Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan, who was also known as “The Wolf of Badenoch”. Despite this, the two towers at the West Front remain intact and are open to visitors, offering magnificent views over Elgin.
You can climb to the observation platform on one of the towers, where you’ll find information boards highlighting different landmarks in view. Inside the cathedral, visitors can discover beautiful medieval stones on display for public viewing for the first time in 20 years, alongside carvings featuring expressive faces, flora, and fauna, as well as part of a rose window dating back to the 1200s. You can also see loaned pieces from Moray Society featuring fragments from medieval windows and glassworks from the cathedral itself!
