Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve, situated on Scotland’s east coast, is a magnificent setting where visitors can experience nature’s delights. Whether you have a passion for plants, an interest in birds or enjoy spotting seals and otters, this is the perfect place for you. The reserve boasts a wide range of habitats, which support an abundance of wildlife throughout all seasons, making it an ideal year-round destination.
At low tide, hungry wading birds can be seen feeding in the tidal basin, providing an intense activity for nature enthusiasts. The sand dunes are home to wildflowers, which are nestled against a grey lichen backdrop, while the pine woods offer visitors a chance to breathe in fresh scents and spot rare pinewood plants.
Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve is also a popular spot for seal and otter spotting, as the fast-flowing currents empty out the tidal basin at every tide, leaving the sands exposed. Seals and their pups can often be seen hauled out on banks, along with waders searching through shallow waters.
The reserve is easily accessible, with car parks available at Littleferry, Balblair Woods, Skelbo and The Mound, and information panels about local wildlife scattered around the reserve. NatureScot manages the reserve, which is located three miles off A9 between Dornoch and Golspie. Limited bus and train services connect Inverness & Thurso to this destination too!
