Pass of Ryvoan
The Pass of Ryvoan is a long circular mountain bike route that runs between Glen More near Aviemore and Nethybridge. Climbing to 380m, the path passes through Caledonian pine woods with stunning views of Cairngorm Mountains and Abernethy Forest. Experienced bikers should be able to complete the entire journey but inexperienced cyclists or those on other types of bikes may need to walk in some sections. Description starts from Nethybridge where there are tea rooms, hotels serving bar lunches and a cafe at the shop in Glenmore. The route can generally be done year round as long as it isn’t snow covered; waterproof clothing is advisable for wet weather while extra warm layers will help during winter months. Abernethy Forest – similar to Rothiemurchus further south – was once home native Scots pine forest which now provides habitat for red squirrels, wildcats, pine martens & red deer (Ospreys were also re-established here back in 1950s). Route Description: starting off from Netheybridge you take minor road westwards before turning south into forest track (ignore left turns), until T junction when turn east followed by second right turn towards pass entrance – two paths join up just prior so either side ok – keep climbing steadily sometimes steeply till leave trees then good view Cairngorm if eyesight good enough; soon after reach Ryvoan Bothy (rough shelter) usually someone camping nearby then last bit very steep descent more like river bed than path leading towards Bynack Stable though actually another bothy; cycling beyond this not possible so continue onto sandy trails entering Glenmore Park with Lochan Uaine above crags drop down small bridge end road at lodge stop reward yourself applestrudel tea room beside campsite!
