Clan MacLennan
This Highland clan originated in the northwest of Scotland, around the mountains and lochs of Kintail. The MacLennans were related to Clan Logan, and they share a tartan. Clan history reveals that on May 9th, 1645, at Auldearn, Ruairidh MacIain Domhnull Bhain MacLennan – the Chief of the Clan – led his people into battle against an army under Sir John Urray’s command for King Charles’ representative, Marquis of Montrose. Unfortunately, their 3,500 foot and 400 horse forces were overwhelmed by flanking movements from Gordon Cavalry, resulting in many clansmen being slain on this day, including the Chief’s two brothers. This marked the beginning of 330 years without a recognized chief until Ronald George McLennan found success after 30 years of tenacious research, resulting in his recognition as “Chief Of Name And Arms Of Mc Lennen” during a ceremony held in Inverness in 1978. Following the Battle of Culloden, 11 prisoners were taken, and it marked the end of the traditional clan system, leaving many McLannens scattered far away, in lands such as New Zealand or even Texas, USA.
Upon Ronald’s death in 1989, young Ruairidh became the youngest registered Scottish clan chief at the age of 13, and he continues to hold that position today. Their coat of arms includes two pipers, recognizing the piping talents of the family. The clan has long been noted for their Gaelic name ‘Mac Gille Fhinnein’, which means “son of the follower of St. Finnian.”
