Aberlour Memorial Garden & Clock Tower
The clock tower on the site of Aberlour Orphanage in the village of Aberlour is all that remains of this historic building. To make it a place local people can be proud and to tell its story, we created a memorial garden. Canon Charles Jupp founded the orphanage in 1875 with his work caring for destitute children from Scotland and it quickly grew into an institution housing 500 children. This last remnant means much to many who have supported Aberlours’s charity over time. Thanks to one committed long-term supporter, information panels were installed at the memorial detailing its history and providing reminder for those old boys/girls visiting their roots here today. Sydney Liddell donated generously after learning about his wife Ethel’s upbringing at this very orphanage between 1928-1938; they had spent 50 years together before her passing away so two trees stand as symbols within this quiet space among bright coloured heather & clematis vines climbing tree trunks along pathways – making it truly lovely! Plaques made by local kids are found on a special stone engraving scenes from yesteryear when kids once played where now stands only memories inscribed upon these stones including Matilda – named such by locals who find her reading stories whilst laying atop beds of heather amidst tranquility & joyous nostalgia!
