Island at the Edge is a specialist producer of yarns, tweeds and designer apparel and knitwear. We rear native Hebridean and Black Cheviot sheep on Edinbane Isle of Skye to produce high quality 5-ply, DK and Aran yarns which we use in our hand-knitted sweaters. Our specialisms are traditional Ganseys as well as Crofters range clothing such as kilts or other traditional dress made from home grown Skye woven tweed. Additionally, we offer Shetland wool for those who wish to work with this material. We also provide courses teaching traditional knitting skills like Gansey (working with five needles) Intarsia, Fairisle or Aran techniques; these classes vary from half day sessions for beginners up to three days duration for experts! Land based skills courses including crofting tours – two hours where you get introduced to animals while learning spinning weaving local history archeology – can be arranged too along with ‘Crofter For A Day’ experience allowing people close contact with animals while experiencing being a true crofter!
