Highland Wildcat Trails Detailed Information

The Highland Wildcat Trails, located in Golspie, are Scotland’s northernmost mountain bike centre, accessed directly from the village centre. The evocatively named trails are nestled at the foot of Ben Bhraggie, a 397m mountain with a monument to the 1st Duke of Sutherland visible from miles around. The trails offer a fun and thrilling mountain biking experience for all levels. The new trail being built on Ben Bhraggie is touted as the UK’s longest freeride descent and is sure to attract downhill enthusiasts from all over.

The trail, designed and built by Pete Laing, who built the first trails at Glentress, climbs the side of Ben Bhaggar before plunging back down to Golspie. The trail features jumps, berms, technical rock sections, and drop-offs, providing an exciting and challenging ride for experienced bikers. The trail starts at the new car park located under the railway bridge and beyond the public one. From there, the trail meanders its way up the slope through trees and interesting features, with diversions along the way.

Once at the top, riders are treated to stunning views of the Moray Firth coastline and can rest at the monument. The real fun begins on the descent, which starts with tight twisting berms before transitioning into a single track that clings precariously to the hill. The trail features jumps, berms, rock drops, and fast swoops into the forest below, taking riders all the way back down to the car park. The total ride covers 15km and is likely to appeal year-round, with the local sandstone providing a great base and high-quality surfaces.

The trails also include the 4km blue-graded Dunrobin Castle, which connects to purpose-built attractive fireroads in the wider countryside. The centre claims to have Scotland’s longest continual descent at 7km and also boasts the longest climb of all. Bike hire is available from the Ticket To Ride Company, which also offers a bike taxi service to help transport up to six cyclists and their bikes and kit in a licensed private hire vehicle. Square Wheels is another bike hire option in the area.
