The Neil Gunn Memorial and Viewpoint
The Neil Gunn Memorial and Viewpoint at Heights of Brae, Strathpeffer commemorates the life and works of one of Scotland’s greatest writers – Neil Miller Gunn (1891-1973). The memorial site is situated around 2km north from Dingwall in an elevated setting with a number of interesting features. This includes a monument, tryst gate, selected quotations engraved on the stonework as well as a short circular pathway which commands magnificent panoramic views ranging from east over Dingwall to Cromarty Firth and Black Isle; southwards towards Cairngorms Mountains; westward to mountain ranges. It was here that Neil spent his most creative years taking regular walks passing this spot often. Visitors are free to visit this tranquil place anytime without any attendants however there is car parking available for visitors along with information pamphlets typically stocked in dispensers located nearby. The Memorial Site is maintained by The Neil Gun Trust –a registered Scottish charity promoting writings by Neil G unn through lectures & writing competitions besides encouraging artistic expression within Highlands region .
